In 2018, I went on pilgrimage to two Catholic pilgrimage sites. The first was to Lourdes, France and the second was to Santiago de Compostela via walking the Camino de Santiago. Lourdes is the home of St. Bernadette, a young woman who encountered the Virgin Mary outside of her remote town. A spring of water appeared during Mary's visit and it continues to flow to this day. Millions flock to Lourdes each year to touch the water that has been attributed with miraculous healing. Santiago de Compostela, is the city in which the tomb of St. James is located. Pilgrims walk for nearly five hundred miles, following in St. James footsteps. The journey can act as a form of penance, simplifying life, and rebirth.
This video is a collection of documentation I captured at each holy site, visually representing the beginning and the end of my pilgrimage. Through the overlaid text, I am exploring my time on pilgrimage and the journey in between these two book end events.
