Waves of Rebirth2018

There is an ancient tradition for pilgrims who finish their journey in Finisterre, also known as the End of the World, to submerge themselves in the Atlantic Ocean. It is said that if they allow nine waves to wash over them, they will be cleansed and reborn. I participated in this ritual after walking the Camino de Santiago but was left wondering what it was in the experience that made me new. Waves of Rebirth is my attempt to understand the depth of the journey I underwent and the personal transformation that occurred along the way.
Throughout the course of a week, I completed a series of private performances in order to better understand my experience.
On the first day, I stood in front of the untouched sand and read aloud the written accounts I kept throughout my pilgrimage journey. On the second day, I transcribed words or phrases from my journal and traced those words with my hand into the sand.
On the third day, I composed a poem about the nine waves, connecting each one to a different moment of growth I experienced.
On the fourth day, I walked back and forth across the sandy floor, creating a path with my feet, while listening to the poem aloud.
On the fifth day, I swept up the sand and mopped the floor, cleansing the space to make it like new.
